Eczema (discoid)

Introduction

Discoid eczema, also known as nummular eczema, is a type of eczema (chronic skin condition) that tends to develop in adults and is rare in children.

It can affect any part of the body, but is usually seen on the lower legs, hands and forearms, and sometimes the trunk.

People with discoid eczema have circular or oval plaques with well-defined edges. The plaques are made of tiny raised red spots and scaling, on a red base. Areas of discoid eczema can be a few millimetres to a few centimetres in size.

Discoid eczema is made worse by dry environments and central heating. If it is not treated, it can last for months or even years.
