Giardiasis

Introduction

Giardiasis is an infection of the digestive system which is caused by tiny parasites called giardia intestinalis. Diarrhoea is the main symptom of giardiasis.

The most common way that a person can become infected with giardiasis is by drinking water that is contaminated with the giardia intestinalis parasite.

The giardiasis infection can also be transmitted when an infected person does not wash their hands properly after using the toilet, and handles food that is then eaten by others. Food can also be contaminated if it is washed with infected water.

Outlook

There are medicines are available that can kill the parasite and cure the infection.

Giardiasis is usually only a serious problem for children who live in poorer countries. This is because the symptoms of diarrhoea can quickly make them dehydrated and malnourished, which can be fatal.
